French Senate Blocks Referendum Amendment
Good news for a change: The French Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee decided to block the amendment passed by the National Assembly that would oblige France to hold a referendum before the French government could assent to the EU accession of any country whose population exceeds five percent of the EU population (see June 1 post). Although the proposal might still be discussed in plenary session, the move makes it unlikely that the proposed amendment will become law.
