Turkey One Step Ahead of the United States

The Foreign Ministry announced that it will be sending a proposal to parliament in July that will pave the way to making Turkey a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol.

From Today's Zaman:
United States is the only rich nation opposed to the UN’s Kyoto Protocol but a shift is expected after the election of a new president in the US, whether a Democrat or a Republican. After the US, Turkey will be the biggest remaining holdout on Kyoto, making it subject to international pressure. Turkey’s per capita emissions in 2003 amounted to 4.1 tons per year, two-and-a-half times lower than average per capita greenhouse gas emissions in what was then the EU-25.
